The Droog Family Songbook
Okay. It’s 2.58am. I am tired – very tired. This morning I undertook to participate in the Movie Mashup 24-hour game design competition. You can read more about it over here. Basically, a long list of films was supplied and participants have to pick two, “mash” them together, and create an RPG based on them. For my inspiration I took the films A Clockwork Orange and The Sound of Music. It’s kind of messed up, but then, so am I. I technically have another few hours before my time is up, but I am done. I think the game is too. Let me work through a checklist while I am here – fluff, setting info, character gen, bad songs, how to play, info / advice boxes, character sheet, contents page, art, what you need. The only things that other RPG’s have are GM advice, monsters and experience / reward, but this game is a rules-light, one-shot, GM-less game that doesn’t really need that stuff. And there is a reward mechanic, kind of, built in. Anyways, I am rambling.
I stole horribly from all kinds of people. I have recently re-read a lot of Gregor Hutton’s games (3:16 Carnage Amongst The Stars, Best Friends, Remember Tomorrow), so that has probably contributed; there is certainly an influence from Zombie Cinema; I even stole from other contestants because they are totally awesome – in particular, hat’s off to Jonathan Lavallee who had the perfect solution to my desire to include singing in the game. You should check out Jonathan’s entry, West Side Horrors.
Take a look at my entry and let me know what you think. Oh, and before you do, be warned it deals with Nazis, Nuns and Ultraviolence. It’s a game.

It’s a bittersweet feeling when the 24 hours are up – you’re glad it’s over, but somehow you know you could’ve squeezed in something more, polished here and there…..
I’m downloading it now. Good work on the getting it done!

Yep. Everytime you finish a 24-hour game you have that rush of adrenalin because you have done something totally cool, but also that feeling of trepidation that perhaps you missed something obvious, or messed up the rules in some way. But it is a blast.
I hope you like The Droog Family Songbook.
