Two Saturday’s ago I caught up with one of my nephews and ran him through his first ever RPG adventure. We went through the entire process of creating a character  – he wanted to be a wizard – talked about the rules and then got into playing. All up it took about 2 hours, which is probably more than enough time for an 11-year old. I had intended to play the new Dragon Age RPG with all my nephews but found myself in a dilemma. I wanted to give the boys a copy of the game to take home and play with their friends, but my budget didn’t run to three extra copies. I was also concerned that the Dragon Age game, at a meagre 132 pages, would still be too long to keep the attention of 11 and 12 year olds. So, I bashed out a game that we could play and they could each take home. The result was Dungeon Quest.

Now, this is not the world’s greatest game, but it is complete with character creation rules, conflict resolution, GM advice and monsters. I would have liked to add more info on running games and a step-by-step walk through for most of the common adventuring activities (sneaking, lock picking, negotiating / bluffing, that kind of thing) in the same way that combat and magic is described. Perhaps I will expand it at a later date.

Don’t forget that there is now a Peril Planet forum that you can join. This would be a great place for you to comment on Dungeon Quest, share your own mods and generally heap praise on this sterling work. :P
