The Beast of Limfjord
The Beast of Limfjord is a game of Dark Ages fantasy. It is currently in development and YOU can help by playing the playtest game and providing feedback. It is a game of historical fantasy, inspired by the tales of Beowulf, the Norse sagas and other historical texts. The playtest version of the game is free to download now.
Get your copy of the playtest game here.
The Details;
The Beast of Limfjord is inspired by dark age stories, Norse sagas and (of course) Hollywood. It is pretty much complete and experienced roleplayers shouldn’t have too much problem with it.
I am giving it away – FREE – so you can enjoy it. But here’s the rub: I want feedback. I want you to play the game, try it out and see what works for you and your group of friends. I want to know whether the rules were clear enough for you to play and overcome any problems that you may have faced during play. In particular, I am interested in finding out the following;
Drives: how often did they come into play – did players have enough Spirit points during the course of play – how often did players take Experience points over Spirit points?
Fate: did anyone lose all their fate – did you feel there was enough tension created (did players feel threatened)?
Difficulty levels: were the players / characters challenged – did you use the post-it notes and how do you feel it worked?
Twists: did you use some more than others – did players choose their own twists?
Risky actions: what kinds of risky actions were attempted – did this create tension?
So, there are a few things you might think about as you play. I really, REALLY do appreciate any thoughts and feedback you might have. The playtest document is a complete, stand-alone game with pre-generated characters, adventure and all the rules you need to play. Join bold Hrofgar and his band of warriors and companions as they seek the dread Beast of Limfjord!
Send your feedback to the address at the bottom of the page (just click the link!).

I’m hoping to run the Beast of Limfjord this weekend and have a question. DO you usually start out with zero spirit points? How quickly have the players in your games collected Spirit points? As this iwill be a one-night, ~4 hour game, I’m wondering if I should let them start with a few SPs.

Ooops, I can’t believe I missed that out! Characters accumulated Spirit pretty quickly in the games I have run as the drives are easy to “hit”. With that said, I began each character with 2 spirit points each. You might like to try giving each character d3 Spirit at the start of the game, if you want to add an element of randomness.
If you haven’t already done so, check out this old blog post for some more info on running the game;

I would caution against using Hrofgar Whitebeard’s “Legendary Warrior” legend as it is very powerful (but I haven’t come up with an alternative yet). I would also change Erlend the Younger’s “Mighty Blow” ability to “Beserker”, as described in the above blog post. Finally, make use of the “Resistance” rule to make your big-bad-guy really nasty.
I look forward to hearing about your game. Also, note that Peril Planet now has a forum and you are welcome to join and post details of your game there!

Hi, Nathan. Greetings from Spain.
I’ve read The Beast of Limfjord and i want to give it a try with my group of players. But, I have a question, what’s the purpose of the 6 boxes under Fate (Injured, Dazed, Trapped, Tired, Angry and Scared).
Thanks

Never mind. I’ve just found the parragraph about conditions.

Yeah, the “conditions” can be ticked off when a twist occurs. While there is a mechanical drawback to having a condition, they are also roleplaying cues – use them as a guide for the way you play a character when they fail rolls.
Please, Raul, let me know how the game goes. I am still gathering feedback and playtest details from all around the world in order to make it the best game I can.
